How EMDR is Different from Other Therapy Approaches

At TrueCandor Behavioral Health, we know that everyone’s path to healing looks different. That’s why we offer several approaches to therapy, from talk-based methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to mindfulness practices.

While we recognize the benefits of these modalities, one approach that often feels very different from the rest is Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). If you’ve ever wondered how EMDR works or why it might be helpful, here’s what sets it apart:

1. EMDR Helps the Brain Heal Naturally: When something overwhelming happens, your brain sometimes struggles to fully process the memory. Instead, it can get “stuck,” leaving you with triggers, flashbacks, or lingering anxiety. EMDR helps your brain reprocess those memories so they no longer feel as heavy or painful.

2. You Don’t Have to Tell Your Story Over and Over: In many types of therapy, you spend time talking through what happened. With EMDR, you don’t need to go into detail for it to work. Instead, your therapist will guide you through form(s) of bilateral stimulation while you briefly focus on a memory. This allows your brain to do the healing work—without you needing to relive the entire story. Sometimes, we don’t even need to know a part of the story to get your brain working, we just need to know how you feel.

3. It Gets to the Root of the Problem: Some therapies focus mainly on managing symptoms, like anxiety or negative thoughts. EMDR goes deeper. By addressing the root memory that caused those feelings in the first place, many people find that the symptoms begin to ease naturally. You may be anxious about an upcoming solo or presentation, but that’s not the real issue. The anxiety you experience is rooted in something deeper. EMDR helps you address that deep, negative cognition to alleviate those fears.

4. You May Notice Results Sooner: Everyone’s healing timeline is different, but many people find EMDR helps them feel relief faster than talk therapy alone. Because EMDR works directly with how memories are stored in the brain, it often helps create lasting shifts in a shorter amount of time.

5. You Feel the Difference in Your Mind and Body: EMDR isn’t just about changing your thoughts—it often creates a full-body sense of relief. Clients describe feeling calmer, lighter, and less triggered after sessions, as if a weight has finally lifted.
